Remembering Days At The Pool.....
Do you remember where Glidden kids used to swim before the Glidden Pool was built? In the old swimming pool at Carroll. (The Carroll pool was built during the Depression by the WPA)  I remember doing that a few times. When Glidden built the pool, it immediately became a very popular spot for the youth of Glidden. Those lazy, hot days with the radio blaring rock and roll music from KIOA in Des Moines and just laying on the sun deck. Life was pretty simple. I had a couple of brothers who ran the pool a summer or two.. Coach Bob Miller did, too. The Glidden swim team was going strong and was quite good.. I was not much of a swimmer, but took lifesaving lessons, etc. The adults, some of my older brothers, would play water volley ball at supper time, after a hard day of work. I see Glidden has built a new swimming pool, which is quite nice. Gosh, we are old. Now my grand daughters swim in the new one on the Fourth of July. You got to give a big hand to the adults in Glidden in the old days, who raised the money to improve the community.

Remembering The Drug Store.....
Platt's Corner is what it was called in our day. Do you remember the great fountain drinks? My favorite was a chocolate coke. Do you remember how cheap everything was? Well, at least compared to today. A kid could get quite a bit for a nickel or dime. It was where I bought baseball cards (a penny a pack) and me and my buddies would walk down the alley and open up the packs, tossing wrappers everywhere. I usually threw away the gum. Root Beer candy was two for a penny. Gum was 7 sticks for a nickel. The Drug Store also had some great little gifts and toys. Remember how everyone would head up there after a Saturday afternoon movie? Cathryn Roberts (sp?) worked there at times. She was always so nice. It was a great place to hang out, but when I got a car, I do not think I ever went there again. DBTRYON
