GRADUATION.......
I remember very little about
graduation. I do remember that we
had a baccalaureate on Sunday. I
remember that because we had a
Catholic priest give a sermon, or
did something special, and I was
fascinated how neat it was that the
different denominations would take
turns and cooperate to wish us all
well. Kind of sad that no ones does
that anymore. I have no recollection
at all of graduation. I would guess
it was on a Tuesday, maybe Monday.
I had an Open House afterward and it
was all relatives. I do not remember
anything fancy and I do not remember
having fellow friends and classmates
stop by. Did anyone do that in those
days. I would guess most of us were
at our own. No huge table of
pictures, either. Cake and punch and
lots of aunts and uncles. Miss.
Krukenberg (sp?), the vocal teacher,
did stop by late and I thought that
was real nice of her. That was the
last I ever saw of her Here are a
couple of pictures from the C.
Bentley Collection. (Mine are long
lost) D.Tryon

Remembering Kindergarten......
One of
my earliest memories of school was
being in Miss Redding's kindergarten
class where I sat next to, or at the
same table, as Peggy Sylvester. I
always thought that was cool that
she could walk home for lunch. One
day she was not at school because
she was sick. She never came back
and never came back and I began to
worry that if she missed anymore
school, she would be kept back
another year...only to find out that
she had been reassigned to another
table across the room and I just
hadn't seen her. That would be the
first sign of my attention skills!

Remembering
Class Rings, Letter Sweaters And
Going Steady....
I loved
those letter sweaters. Bright
gold/yellow with the dark blue G
near the lower pocket. I just
thought they looked great on males
and females, especially during the
basketball season. I bet that we
were one of the last classes to wear
them. I do not remember any older
classes doing it, but some probably
did.
Remember how excited we were when we
finally got the class rings? Then,
if you were "going" with someone,
there went your ring and WHAMO, you
were now going 'steady". OK, like
who made these rules up?
Level One-A Date or Two
Level Two-Going With Someone
Level Three-Steady
Level Four-Engagement
Well, I have told this story a few
times in my classroom, but
never to my classmates.
It was 1967. (Historians call it the
Summer Of Love) It is the beginning
of the Age of Aquarius. Back in
Iowa, it was still the 1950s. I was
"dating" a really nice girl ( I
know, that is hard to believe. Did
she have visual issues?) and we now
had our class rings, so it seemed
kind of a natural thing to "go
steady". Well, I was informed that I
would have to ask her parent's for
permission......Huh?.....What?,,,,,,,Really?.....Gulp....So
one Saturday night, after going to
the movies in Lake City, we went to
her home and the living room
mysteriously cleared and it was just
ME and her parents......Did I say
Gulp?.....Knees
wobbling.....sweating like a race
horse......feeling rather light
headed.....I cleared my throat,
summoned all the courage that I
could and asked her parents for
permission to go steady with their
daughter....(I think I sounded like
a Chipmunk, it was not my finest
moment).......There was an
UNBELIEVABLY long silence.....All I
heard was silence.....except for
those knees wobbling and a strange,
low, moan from my stomach....I could
hear their clock go tick, tick,
tick.......FINALLY.....her Dad kind
of mumbled......"Well, maybe if her
grades do not drop"........Geeze...I
think that is what he said as I was
about to drop before her grades ever
would.....I took that for a yes, but
am not sure that it was....I don't
think her folks were real
thrilled.....Am I the only guy on
the planet who had to do this?
Now the strange thing is..... like
what is this?.....Steady?.....Who
makes up these rules?....What IS
steady?......I realize that I am not
the sharpest pencil in the box, but
I never did figure out what this all
meant......I could just imagine some
poor guy asking my folks for
permission to go steady with one of
my sisters...My brothers would razz
that guy all the way home...He would
never come back.....My Dad would be
sleeping in his chair and my Mom
would be shaking her foot while
knitting?....but the boys would take
care of it.....Guaranteed.
Anyway, I was really proud to have
her wear my ring....Even though it
was WAY too large, the girls in our
school fixed those minor
issues with the old yarn trick. Or
as Elvis sang, "Won't you wear my
ring, around your neck?" I imagine
we were one of the last classes to
"go steady", but I am not sure. Kids
today, just laugh, but deep down I
think they wish that maybe some of
the old traditions really were kind
of fun. I lost my class ring years
ago.
So just to see who is reading these
little memories.....What member of
our class HOCKED their class ring to
pay for college classes in Alaska?

OMG!!
Freshmen Prom Servers!!!
One
of my favorites from the Jr./Sr.
prom. I think we were freshmen at
the time, and too young and proud to
realize how dorkish we were!
Whoever chose these costumes should
be hung from the goalposts.

Introducing
The Wildcat Marching Band!!!
From the band calendar of 67, our
junior year. The calendar listed
everyone's birthday. I know that in
our house, this was the calendar of
record. It was always hung by our
phone. You got to love reading
through the businesses that
sponsored the calendar. Great

Remembering
The State FHA Convention.......
Kris Junker and myself ( we are the
two in the middle). The two girls
on the end I don’t recognize and I
don’t remember who else was there.
I do remember we were local FHA
officers that got to attend the
state convention at the hotel Fort
Des Moines. It was a big deal, as
it was the first time in a big hotel
with a big banquet. We stayed one
night and I remember Mrs. Oxenford
gave us instructions on how to tip
the bell hops......L. Bushman

Remembering School
Lunches......
I hated school lunches, but I loved
the cooks, who were always so
helpful. It always seemed we were
the smallest kids. The noise, the
crowds, the smells, especially the
smells, really bothered me. I still
cannot stand the smell of corn bread
and those white navy beans. It got
so bad, that I started eating at
home. Now this was quite a feat. We
only had about 20 minutes. I would
have to run down the three flights
of stairs, then out the back door of
the gym (near the locker room) and
run up the school alley to our
house, a short block away. My Mom,
bless her heart, would usually have
tomato soup and bread and butter
ready on the table. Sometimes those
egg salad sandwiches left over from
Sunday nights. I would snarf down
the food as fast as I could, then
sprint back to school. I was always
late for the next class as I ran
like a three legged dog. (no offense
to three legged dogs intended). I
was the only one in our family who
ever did this. I don't remember kids
bringing sack lunches, but some
probably did. Oh, I loved the peanut
butter sandwich days, which was
about once a week if I remember.
Gosh, today's schools, peanut butter
is banned and our school does not
allow food from home, like treats.
Geeze, the times are a changing, I
guess......d.tryon |
